National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

Dear Parents & Guardians,

As you may have heard last June, a new Federal statutory holiday was proclaimed: the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. The Provincial government followed that announcement and advised all public sector employers to recognize the importance of this day in 2021. As you also may have heard last Thursday September 2nd, in recognizance of this, the New Westminster School District will be adjusting their calendars to show Thursday, September 30th, 2021 as equivalent to a statutory holiday with all schools and school sites being closed. Accordingly, this means that all WCAS sites will be closed on September 30, 2021 to mark the first year that we honour this new day. *Noting: the Provincial government is working with Indigenous leaders and partners to determine the most appropriate way to commemorate this day going forward, potentially affecting the details around the 2022 holiday.

To provide more context: September 30th was selected because it is Orange Shirt Day … an important opportunity to learn about the horrific realities of the residential school experience, and a day to honour and support the healing journey that generations of survivors continue to work through.

Kindest regards, Candace Beswick Director of Program's Westminster Children’s After School Society (WCAS) 604.540-1688 www.wcass.com
